Impact Youth Development Programme

Empowering Refugee Youth in Levin

Why Levin?

Levin has about 200 Colombian and Venezuelan refugees, many of whom are between the ages of 12-25. New arrivals come every two weeks, and by the end of 2024, this number is expected to triple. Despite their enthusiasm to contribute and be part of their community, refugee youth often feel isolated, facing challenges like mental health struggles, bullying, discrimination, and even gang recruitment.

When we spoke to young people in Levin, they told us about feeling excluded from mainstream activities and education. They wanted a space to connect, be heard, and build friendships with others who understand what they’re going through. That’s when Impact was born.

What We Do

Every Friday after school, we run Impact at Te Whare Mahana – Levin Community Hub. Our programme is led by refugee youth themselves, giving them the chance to lead, create, and thrive. It’s a place where they can share, learn, and have fun. Here’s what we focus on:

  • Mental & Physical Health: Through fun social and recreational activities, we promote well-being and healthy living.
  • Educational Development: We offer information and tools to help youth succeed in school and beyond.
  • Creative & Fun: Impact is a safe space for creativity and relaxation, helping young people unwind from their busy lives.
  • Belonging & Integration: Our sessions aim to help youth feel part of the Levin community while learning about their rights and responsibilities in New Zealand.
  • Leadership & Activism: For those interested in making a change, we encourage youth to step up and create opportunities for themselves and others.

A Programme by Youth, for Youth

Our youth leaders, many of whom are juggling school and family responsibilities, volunteer their time to run Impact. They understand the challenges of being a refugee and are passionate about helping others in similar situations.

The Results

Since we started, we’ve seen a huge improvement in the well-being of the young people involved. Local schools have noticed that participants are more confident, engaged, and motivated. Some have even transitioned from school to full-time work or higher education!

But we’re not stopping here. Impact is needed now more than ever, and the youth want it to grow. We’re committed to keeping this programme running and expanding, so more young people can benefit from this space of connection and growth.
